Structures:

1. Electronic Appearance: Earth to Mars Chats

Here's an example of how synchronous (real time) chat can be used in electronic appearances. This site features the transcripts of five chats dealing with the Mars Pathfinder mission and other planetary events. You

will find that the students' questions are very specific, and the scientists' answers are succinct.

2. Question-Answer Activity: The Hubble Team Answers Your Questions

Grades: 3-12

In 1996, NASA, PBS, and NSF collaborated to create a site from which students could e-mail questions to Hubble scientists...check out the archives to get a feel for this innovative project.

4. Web Quest: Sheppard's Science Web Quests

A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests

are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The model was developed in early 1995 at San Diego State University by Bernie Dodge and Tom March, and was outlined then in Some Thoughts About WebQuests.

  1. Treasure Hunt/Filamentality: Treasure Hunt: Stars

Filamentality is a fill-in-the-blank interactive Web site that guides you through picking a topic, searching the Web, gathering good Internet sites, and turning Web resources into learning activities. It helps you combine the "filaments" of the Web with a learner's "mentality" (get it?). Support is built in through Mentality Tips, so you'll be guided along the way and end up with a Web-based activity you can share with others even if you don't know anything about HTML, Web servers, or all that www-dot stuff.
